Maintenance and repair of
a djembe

First of all something about maintenance. The djembe as a whole is very
sensitive to moist and draught.
The wood expands
when it is moisty and shrinks again when temperature is rising.
Actually the same thing counts for the skin, also you can notice this by the
sound. Make sure that the djembe at home is placed in a room with constant
temperature. You can put a towel on top, so that will absorb the moist. This
way you don't have to string the djembe often and the skin will last longer.
If you go outside with
the djembe, do protect it against rain and put it into a large bag.
If the skin eventually
snaps, you can replace it and string the djembe or let someone else do
this for you. When a new skin is put on, it needs to be regulary stringed again
before you get a good sound out of it. This will take a couple of weeks.
Tip
: If you do not know how to string; let someone do it for you or explain,
then try yourself and let the one beside you watch and give you advise!
